Words of the Week - Justice and Privilege.

When we are not hungry for justice, it's because we are too full with privilege.

Words of the Week - Privilege

We've got this propped up against the window in the dining room and I try to look at it and take it in every day.

I've just this minute finished listening to a podcost episode of the The Calmer You where Chloe Brotheridge interviews the most excellent Keri Jarvis and among the many other insightful things she says about action and activism and self care, (paraphrased) was this…

We often feel we are entitled to a frictionless life, to calm, peaceful, joyful, lives and it's not that we are not deserving of those things, it’s that there's something to confront around who pays for my peace, with their lives? What about the areas of the earth that are being affected in different ways by the things that we benefit from in the west?

To notice that if I feel guilty, restless, despair, ashamed, that it's not neccessarily inappropriate to have those feelings. And so rather than running away because its all too much, thinking carefully about what I am going to do with those feelings. Instead of staying locked in the narrative that I’ll do something when I have more time, more money, more knowledge, to acknowledge that we currently belong in a system that keep us feeling threatened, that tells us we don’t ever have enough and so we feel that we couldn’t possibly look up from that constant need to provide enough to keep just ourselves safe.

If I told myself firmly, I have enough. Now where can I give to someone else?
