Our latest and probably most adventurous trip we've done with the kids was Jaipur and New Dehli. I've longed to visit India ever since my backpacking days, and my longing has only grown as I've discovered the incredible artisanal creativity that springs from the people of India. In particular I wanted to go to Rajasthan because of the fabrics, block printing and metal work that comes from that region. It would of been lovely to explore the whole area but it is actually, quite enormous, and for only 10 days, with the children we would of ended up spending too much time travelling. We decided to stick to Jaipur and Dehli and really get to know both places.
So! We set off for Jaipur (via Paris and Mumbai)and although it was a pretty brutal trip sleep wise, we arrived early morning in the Pink City and it was just amazing! We stayed in a gorgeous old Havaeli which was richly decorated on almost every surface, frescos, patterned, marble sculptures and plaques.
And then, just.the.most.incredible.detail inside the Amer Fort (also spelt Amber Fort). The carvings, the paintings. All of it was such a feast for the eyes.
The carvings at the bases of so many of the columns.
Nothing compared to these frescos below, which covered one of the most richly decorated entrances I've ever seen. The colours and style have stayed with me ever since and I'm hoping to encorporate it into my work in some way coming up.
This dude is THE COOLEST. I wish I had him in my garden!!
I'm running out of superlatives to use but honestly, everything was just so jaw droppingly incredible. The ceilings were dazzling.
I'm still not sure how I feel about elephants being ridden on but it was always a thrill everytime we came across one sharing the road with our tuk tuk!
A few snaps from our wanderings....
It most certainly lived up to the title of Pink City, literally my favourite shade of pink, and it was everywhere!
I hope you've enjoyed these photos from our trip, Part 2 will be a bit more Jaipur and then Dehli!
